Mr. Lawson 

Mr. Andrew E. Lawson has been the Director of Bands at Innovation Academy and Springfield Middle School since 2019. His responsibilities at iA and SMS include directing the Beginning Band, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band. Under his direction, the Band has received "Excellent” and “Superior" ratings at regional concert assessments. In 2022, Mr. Lawson was named a Marquis Who's Who in Education for outstanding achievements and contributions in music education.

Mr. Lawson devotes his time away from Springfield to music composition and performance. As a composer, his music has received international acclaim. He is a three-time winner of the Dallas Wind Symphony’s international fanfare composition contest, an arranger and orchestrator for Sovereign Grace Music, and composes music for middle school, high school. university, and professional ensembles across the United States. His compositions Fantasia Espanola and Upon New Horizons have placed as semi-finalist and finalists in the professional division for The American Prize in Wind Band Composition. His music has been performed by bands and orchestras across the United States, including the Cherokee Middle School Band, Tullahoma Middle School Band, Tullahoma High School Band, Roane County High School Band, Tennessee Tech Symphony Band, Liberty University Wind Ensemble, UGA Wind Ensemble, and most notably, the Dallas Wind Symphony.
As a performer, Mr. Lawson specializes on horn, as well as historical brass instruments. Mr. Lawson has performed with the Tennessee Tech Wind Ensemble, Tennessee Tech Symphony Band, Sewanee Symphony Orchestra, United States Navy Band, and United States Army Field Band. Mr. Lawson is also a member of The Directors Brass Quintet, a professional ensemble based in White House, TN. He also frequently performs with regional bands and orchestras across Middle and East Tennessee, and serves as first tenor horn in the
Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band in Crossville, TN.


Mr. Lawson is a graduate of Tullahoma High School in Tullahoma, TN and earned his bachelor's degree in Instrumental Music Education at Tennessee Technological University. During his time at TTU, he was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, University Orchestra, Bryan Symphony Orchestra, Horn Choir, Clarion Wind Quintet, Aureus Wind Quintet, and the Golden Eagle Marching Band. His collegiate instructors include Mr. Joseph Hermann, Dr. Eric Harris, Dr. Brian Diller, Dr. Greg Danner, Dr. Judith Sullivan, Dr. Jennifer Shank, and Dr. Jeff Miller. 


Mr. Lawson’s professional affiliations include active memberships in the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association (MTSBOA), Tennessee Music Educators Association (TMEA), Tennessee Bandmasters Association (TBA), High School Band Director's National Association (HSBDNA), National Band Association (NBA), American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Lovebird Music Publishing in Plano, TX, and BrookWright Music Publishers in London, England. When not at Springfield, composing, or performing, Mr. Lawson spends his time hiking, bike riding, kayaking, volunteering at his church, spending time with friends and family, and playing disc golf.
